Newark, NJ - June 11, 2009 - Mayor Cory A. Booker will join Governor Jon S. Corzine, New Jersey Adjutant General Glenn K. Rieth, GI Go Fund Executive Director Jack Fanous, and many other State dignitaries to welcome home more than 2,900 New Jersey National Guardsmen including more than 150 Newark residents, returning from a 10-month deployment in Iraq, at a parade, welcoming ceremony, and star-studded show for the troops’ families in Trenton, tomorrow, Friday, June 12, starting at 10 a.m.
More than 2,900 men and women of the 50th Infantry Brigade Combat Team served for 10 months in Iraq, the largest deployment of New Jersey National Guardsmen to overseas combat since World War II. The soldiers will march from the New Jersey World War II Memorial and Statehouse down South Broad Street to the Sovereign Bank Arena. Marching bands from Ewing, Paterson, Trenton, and Newark’s own Malcolm Shabazz High School will participate in the 1.1-mile parade route. Mayor Booker will join Governor Corzine and General Rieth to greet Soldiers at the start of the parade. They will also speak at a star-studded show taking place at the Sovereign Bank Arena, with comedian Joe Piscopo, Broadway “Phantom of the Opera” star Mary D’Arcy, American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle, Patti La Belle vocalist and Trenton native Sarah Dash, and R&B artist Charij performing.
