Former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber will join Newark Mayor Cory A. Booker today at noon at Boys' Park, Sussex Avenue and Duryea Street, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The 1.291-acre park underwent a $1.2 million restoration, with the city paying $500,000 and the balance being funded by GreenSpaces. The renovation is part of a $3.7 million project to renovate three parks -- Boys, First Street and Thomas Silk -- in the same neighborhood, with GreenSpaces bearing $1.5 million of the overall costs.
The renovation was done in partnership with Tiki Recreation, which helped to bring state-of-the-art playground equipment to the Central Ward. In addition to the playground equipment, the park will have a multipurpose field, basketball court and bocce ball courts.
The designer for the park was Neglia Engineering of Lyndhurst. Mast Construction served as the construction manager while Zenith Construction Services was the contractor.
